About My Clients
I work specifically with couples, because I believe relationships strike at the core who we are and how we learn about ourselves. As we navigate life's stages, our relationships ALWAYS change, and eventually, we can feel out of sync. Sometimes, we just need someone to help sort things out; upgrade our communication skills, or help us rebuild trust and intimacy. Someone to help us feel safe, and understood (not judged or stigmatized) and to guide us in using some new skills.
My Background and Approach
Most clients describe me as extremely "down-to-earth" and "genuine". When I first started, over 20 years ago, I was more like the therapists in the movies; sitting quietly and occasionally asking "how does that make you feel". Over the years, I've learned to be much more myself; both in how I show concern, as well as how I speak. I will take risks to tell you what I'm thinking, but always with respect and care. I think therapy works the best as a collaborative effort, with everyone in the room engaging the process as authentically as they can (and that includes the therapist). Trained in multiple modalities (Gottman Method, Internal Family Systems, etc.) I utilize different approaches for different clients. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" method; and instead, try to find what works best for each client (including when each partner in a couple has varying concerns). I try to balance practical relational skills with a willingness to look a little deeper when needed.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I value the power of relationships. The relationships in my past (both positive and negative) were the places I have learned the most about myself. In therapy, I try and model what a healthy relationship looks like and I work hard to help each person in the room feel safe and understood. I am LGBTQ+ allied and provide a safe and supportive environment for all types of relationships.
