Adjustment disorders are a reaction to an event, and can impact all of us, from children and adolescents to adults. Symptoms vary depending on how the disorder presents itself. You can experience anxiety, depressed mood, disturbance of emotions and conduct, or a combination of all of the above. Treatments can vary as well, and might include individual therapy, couples therapy, or family therapy.

Chronic family problems can have lasting effects! From our family of origin, we develop our expectations of others, communication skills, outlook on life, ability to give and receive love, and coping skills, among other traits. Family problems from mild to severe will challenge every family at some point. These can result from behavioral and mental health issues in the family or from specific stressful events.

Life transitions can vary based on many factors and are personal to the individual’s experience. What may seem like a big transition to one person may not feel that way to someone else. These transitions can be positive, negative, planned, or unexpected and still have a strong effect emotionally. Engaging in therapy to learn healthy coping mechanisms for life transitions can be extremely beneficial for anyone’s mental health and overall well-being.

Utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we will collaborate in order to explore how your thinking "style" or pattern can impact your mood and behavior. We will explore CBT-specific skills and exercises that are designed to change your thought patterns through practice. CBT has been shown to improve depressed mood, unburden people from anxiety and fears, change relationships for the better, and help people cope with life stresses.

If exploring couples counseling, I will work with both you and your partner to address a wide range of relationship issues, including recurring conflicts, feelings of disconnection, infidelity, issues related to sex, or difficulties due to external stressors. I often employ an integrated approach to treatment, borrowing techniques from different forms of therapy, depending on the needs of each couple.

I work from a person-centered approach with all of my clients. By utilizing this approach, I strive to listen without judgment to acknowledge your experience without shifting our conversation in another direction. You are the expert on you! With that in mind, I will encourage and support you as we explore the process of self-discovery. In doing so, we will uncover what is hurting you and what is needed to be done in order to repair the hurt.
